Inaltarea Domnului - Ascension of the Lord

The Ascension of the Lord is celebrated every year 40 days after the Resurrection, on Thursday of the 6th week after Easter. The holiday is also known among the people as Ispas, from the Slavic word Supasu, which means Savior.

It is the feast in which the Church commemorates every year the last event of the Savior's earthly life. With His ascension to heaven, the work of redeeming the human race from the slavery of death and sin is completed, but He will remain with us until the end of time, as a hymn of Thursday says: "...You have ascended in glory, Christ our God, never separating from us, but remaining never far away and crying out to those who love You: I am with you and no one is against you!"

On this day, Christians greet each other with "Christ is Risen!" and respond "Truly He is Risen!".

Also on the day of the Ascension of the Lord, our ancestral Church officiates memorial services for the heroes of the Romanian nation and the church bells will be rung in gratitude to the heroes who sacrificed themselves for the nation, faith and country. Those of you who have relatives in your families who gave their lives on the battlefields, in camps and in prisons, for the defense of the homeland and the ancestral faith, for the unification of the nation, the freedom and dignity of the Romanian people, are asked to send us the names of those sacrificed, so that they can be commemorated on Heroes' Day.

We will meet you on Thursday at the Holy Liturgy, celebrated in honor of the great feast of the Ascension of the Lord and Heroes' Day, at 10:00 am.
